The Backyard Barbeque Has Become a Time Honored Tradition in Our Country
If you enjoy staying home and having fun, a backyard barbeque can be a great activity for all. The word barbeque has come to carry many meanings over the years. It is certainly use to describe a specific cooking process and over time it has evolved to also mean a social gathering at our homes with our family and friends. To me it is what backyard fun is all about.
The backyard barbeque has indeed become a much looked forward to activity on weekends and holidays.
The word barbeque is believed to have first originated from the word barbacoa found in the language of the Taino people of the caribbean. Now days it is commonly spelled numerous ways and has come to carry many different meanings, but primarily is used to describe a specific cooking process.
Many people confuse barbecuing with grilling. Actually there is a very major difference between the two, but learning how to do either is just not that difficult.
When you BBQ you are cooking your food at lower temperatures, generally between 225 degrees and 250 degrees over an indirect heat, adding some wood chips along the way for additional flavoring.
Generally speaking this type of cooking is great for larger and tougher cuts of meat and slow is the name of the game here. This is a great way to cook if you are not in a hurry and willing to make a day of it.
"Actually when I say slow I mean real slow. if you are looking for a quick meal this is not the way to go"
When you are grilling, you are cooking your food at higher temperatures, generally over 500 degrees. You are cooking your food over a direct heat source and the time it takes you to cook your food is measured in minutes not hours.
This type of cooking is very well suited for smaller cuts of meat like steaks, burgers and hot dogs or brats. If you are in a hurry this is a great way to go while still having that great outdoor cooked flavor.
"Quick and careful is the name of the game here"
The purists of the group would not consider grilling as real BBQ and I would tend to agree with them, but I do have to admit that I have spent many years using only a grill to cook my food before I began learning the pleasures of real barbecuing. Something I discovered while we lived in the south. I can tell you this though, many times while I was grilling I was using indirect heat as a way to slow things up. I guess I was already preparing myself for some real BBQ.
When I am using a grill I consider using indirect heat as kind of a cross between grilling and barbecuing.
