Bocce Ball is a Game That Can be Played in Your Backyard.

Although bocce ball is a game that can be played in your backyard, it is also a game that is best suited for older kids and adults. It is just a bit much for the younger kids to figure out.

This particular game can be played on an actual court or you can play it in your backyard.

Actually you can play it almost anywhere you like.

For the serious players, know that your bocce ball court size would be approximately 65 to 88 feet long and 8 to 13 feet wide. For the more casual player like myself, you can just go with it and not worry about court size.

This is a game that can be played by 2 to 8 players.

The bocce rules are rather straight forward and easy to learn. There are 8 balls to the game, four for each side and one smaller ball called the pallino. You can divide the balls evenly among all the players.

The purpose of the game is to get your booce balls as close to the pallino as possible.

The match begins when one player throws the pallino to the other side of the court. If you are playing a serious game then this ball should be at the other end of the court in a zone about 16 feet long and it should start about 6 feet from the end of the court.

If you aren't playing that serious of a game, just throw the pallino to where you want it.

The play and the scoring

To start the play, pick one player to toss the pallino down the field. This player should also throw the first ball. Since no one else has played yet, this player will be considered inside (closest to the pallino) and will not get to throw again until someone gets their ball closer to the pallino.

All the players take turns tossing their ball down field trying to get it as close to the pallino as possible.

Players can toss their balls in the air in an effort to knock the pallino closer to one of their balls, or to knock an opposing player's ball away from the pallino.

You would do this to put yourself in a better position.

After all the balls have been tossed, you would go measure the distances from the balls to the pallino. Only the person or team closest to the pallino can score points. This is called the inside person. Everyone else is outside.

The player or team will get one point for every ball they have that is closer to the pallino than their opponent's balls.

At that point the frame is over and a new one is started. You start the frame by having a new person throw out the pallino and starting all over again.

The game of bocce ball is won when the first person or team reaches 13 points. You can play as many frames as necessary to reach this point level.

You also have the option to reduce or increase the point level for a game as you see fit. No problem there and choices are after all good for having backyard fun.
