Grilled Hamburgers Are a Great American Favorite
Having grilled hamburgers on the weekend is probably one of the most popular of all meals made in our backyards.
I would venture to say that on weekends, especially holiday weekends, there are more burgers being grilled than anything else.
I think there are two reasons for this. One, making them is inexpensive and secondly, grilling hamburgers is very easy to do. It is kind of hard to mess them up unless you just plain aren't paying attention.
If you search the internet, you will probably find a ton of grilled hamburger recipes out there. Most of these are fairly basic in nature and very easy to make. Quite frankly besides these recipes there also are a number of great seasoning mixes out there as well that you can buy.
For that reason, when we do come out with a recipe, we are trying to experiment and do something a bit different. We realize that not every hamburger recipe will turn out the best or please everyone. We just want to try new and different things.
This particular recipe is just us experimenting one night. Actually, I have already changed it a little bit from what I originally did.
The mix
| 1 Cup chopped onion | 1 TBL Paprika | | 1 TSP Dry mustard | 1 TSP Onion powder | | Dash of Nutmeg | 1/2 TSP Cayenne pepper | | 1 TSP Crushed oregano | 2 TSP Kosher or sea salt | | 2 TSP Garlic powder | 1 TSP Black pepper |
This mix should be good for 4 to 5 pounds of meat.
Also, I try to make this a few days ahead of time so the different flavors have time to mix together. Just keep it in an airtight container until you are ready to use it.
Putting it all together
After you have chopped your onions, put your hamburger in a bowl and mix in your chopped onion and about 1/3 of your season mix. Knead the meat with all the ingredients in, making sure it all gets mixed in very well.
Once that is done take your hamburger and make your patties. Make them to the thickness you prefer. Debbie actually prefers them thin and I prefer them a bit thicker.
With the patties made, take the rest of your mix and sprinkle it on all the burgers, then assuming your grill is preheated and cleaned off, you should be ready to go.
Just two additional thoughts. I do like to get my meat to room temperature before I throw it on the grill so if you do leave it out be sure to keep it covered to keep the flies off.
This is a meal that is best cooked with the burners on high. In my opinion, I feel that grilled hamburgers come out much better when they are cooked this way. Each side gets seared to keep the juices in and remember, they cook up quick so do keep an eye on things.
This meal should cook up in a matter of minutes, so if you have people who vary in how well done they prefer their meat plan ahead. Also, remember to put the thicker burgers on before the thinner ones.
Well, we sure do hope that you enjoy this recipe. Also if your looking for some additional tips on grilling your food or buying a grill please feel free to visit our grilling tips section for some additional help and ideas.
