The House Wren is a Very Common Backyard Bird

The house wren is just one type of the overall species.

There are about 80 different types of wrens, but this particular species is very popular and prevalent through out North and South America.

Fun Fact: They are a feisty bunch to say the least.

These are very energetic little creatures. It is not uncommon at all to see them hopping around from branch to branch or in the bushes or thickets.

They are also very clever and inquisitive birds and they are a fairly small song bird.

Their songs are cheery and energetic.

During the summer these birds can be found in backyards, farmyards, parks, open forests etc. In the winter time they do tend to be a bit more selective in where they can be found. You can usually find them in places like hedgerows, thickets etc.

One thing is for certain though.

They are a great backyard bird for many reasons, the least of which is that they eat insects and spiders. They are a good bird to have around for your garden.

A suet feeder might attract these birds to your backyard.

If you are looking to attract these wrens to your yard they are open to eating other things besides insects. They do also enjoy chopped apples, peanut butter, bread crumbs and suet.

Water sources like a bird bath are great for attracting these birds as well. Just make sure the bath isn't greater than 3" deep. Also it should have sloping sides with a somewhat rough surface for traction.

Fun Fact: The males build the nest. They might make several nests for the female to choose from.

The house wren will make their nest to lay their eggs almost anywhere.

They love to find little cavities, natural or not to build their nests in. Heck if you leave an old shoe out, who knows, they might even use that.

They can also be a very aggressive bird. They will chase other birds away from a potential nesting site and they have been known to destroy the eggs and kill the young of other birds in the area.

Fun Fact: They have even been known to fill another bird's nest with sticks to make it unusable.

A good wren house can be very simple in design.

The house wren is a bird that will be attracted by a bird house and they will use them. Wren houses don't have to be exceptionally large or elaborate.

A simple design with the house being about 8 inches long would do fine. The important thing is the hole. It should not be any larger than 1 1/8".

This would be small enough to keep larger birds out.
